Barnsley Squash Club
Barnsley Squash Club first opened on the 1st February 1975 with two courts and no changing rooms. Players changed some thirty yards away in the Cricket Pavilion/Clubhouse. This proved to be an unsatisfactory arrangement once the cricket season started, therefore two large sheds were purchased and placed near to the squash complex entrance.
By 1976 the club were able to build ladies and gents changing rooms complete with showers and toilets. This set-up continued for some time but, due to the popularity of the game, it was decided in 1981 to build two more courts. These were finally opened in 1982 financed with the help of a grant from the sports council.
Following the takeover of the site by Barnsley Rugby Club, the courts are now linked into a brand new clubhouse complex which is proving a huge success.
With a membership of approximately three hundred the club has a good mix of male, female, student and junior players and for the latter there is free coaching throughout the season plus a summer school.
Barnsley Squash Club has always fielded teams in both the Yorkshire Leagues and Sheffield and District Leagues. It runs it's own internal leagues and club championships for members. With a good history of being both strong and competitive, the club is in a healthy position to have a great future. The club has recently been awarded the Bronze Club Certificate of Excellence by England Squash.
